The Washington University School of Medicine celebrated Thursday the opening of its 11-story Neuroscience Research Building, touted as one of the largest neuroscience research buildings in the world, built to match the school’s reputation as the nation’s premier research institution in neurology.

The $616 million structure on the medical campus near Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children’s hospitals brings over 700 researchers and 120 laboratories into one space, working shoulder to shoulder to tackle some of the most intractable conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, brain injuries and psychiatric illnesses.

The researchers, formerly spread across eight different buildings, will pull together ideas and expertise from a variety of fields such as surgery, psychiatry and anesthesiology to transform diagnoses and treatments.
